How To Make a Password Protected Win Rar Archive

There are three reasons why you should make Win Rar archives for the backup data that you put up to your Netpoint hosted Sharepoint site. The first reason is that it makes the file smaller by compressing it. The second is that you can add multiple sub directories to a backup archive with a single action. The third is that you can further protect the security of your archived file by adding a password to it.

You will need a registered copy of Win Rar to make passworded archives, these are availablefrom Rarlabs.

If you don't want to make passworded archives, the free trial version of Win Rar is available from Rarlabs

Navigate to the folder or files that you want to atchive, and select the files that you want to add to your archive. You can select multiple sequential files by holding down Shift as you click, or you can select multiple non-sequential files one at a time by holding down Ctrl as you click.

Now Right Click your highlighted files, a menu will appear. Move your mouse down this meny until it is over WinRar. This will further expand your menu options, you need to select Add To Archive.

Now you have some options, and the first thing that you should do is give your archive a file name. This should be descriptive enough that you will recognise your archive later on when you want to retrieve it.

Password protecting your archive is a two step process. Firstly, select the Put authenticity verification tick box. Now at the top select the Advanced tab (along the top), click Set Password located on the centre right now.

Your passworded archive is now created and ready to be sent up to your Sharepoint backup site.
